What sort of materials will the house be built out of- this will have a major impact on the heating? Do E+E do any sort of green building (low environmental impact)? Are we going to incorporate any solar?
As to questions regarding remote control of heating, as well as heating a few rooms vs. the whole house, should I ask my dad, since he basically built his business around this?

Ed,
Eric and Eric build Energy-Star homes, so they are pretty efficient. We saw one under construction that had a tiny furnace that vented intake air and exhaust through PVC pipes and a water heater without the storage tank.
I think that since the house is so small shutting off one or two rooms will have little benefit for the added complexity.
No solar hot water or PV is currently planned.
I'd love to hear what your dad has to say about slab heating, remote control etc.
Ben
I just replied to Ed's note as a new posting. You guys are much better at the scientific terms!
